FETE DAY 2002

Introduction

The old saying: 'it never rains on Fete Day' wasn't quite true this year. Gentle rain on and off throughout the afternoon dampened things slightly, but never threatened to spoil it. As usual, there was entertainment from the Music Man and the Drybrook Band, with a display  of country dancing from Hope Brook School, and a falconry flying display. The procession was due to start from the Latchen at 2:15pm, but those that turned up at that time were disappointed to see the floats disappearing into Church Road. The Drybrook Band too, were left behind - they were supposed to head the procession, but were left taking up the rear with not a note to be heard! We did hear them perform later at the Recreation Ground.

The Floats

This years winner was Jesters Kids Club with their float entitled "Harry Potter". Other floats taking part were: "Father Christmas" by Longhope Playgroup, "The Queen's Golden Jubilee" by Hope Brook School, and "The Oldest Swingers In Town" by The British Legion. All were excellent, and all deserved to be winners.

The Carnival Princess

With the amalgamation of the two primary schools, there was only one Carnival Princess this year representing Hope Brook School. That privilege and honour fell on the shoulders of Paula Williams, and how lovely she looked.

The organisers are hoping to trace previous carnival queens in the hope that they would be prepared to "do it again one day". If you have left the village, but were one of those people from way back, then please get in touch. Finally

I hope that everyone who went had a good time as it is a real village event. The pessimists said that it would rain, but the optimists kept saying that it never rains on Longhope Fete! The first time ever in how many years....?

One Last Note

A completely unbiased castle builder says: Yeehah to all involved in the Harry Potter Float, Jesters lifts the cup. Next stop Mitcheldean!
