Local Amenities

Although Longhope is situated in the middle of nowhere, residents do not have to travel far for basic requirements such as bread or a stamp. For a complete list of shops, nearby schools, libraries and other entertaining delights see the Amenities section.

Fête Day

Fête Day One of Longhope's most celebrated traditions is Fete Day, held on the first Saturday of July each year. The old saying "it never rains on fête day" has held true for nearly 50 years, but we're not going to mention the fact that it did rain last year though.

The fete is the one guaranteed day of the year when the whole village descends upon the recreation gound to try their hand at the coconut shy, bounce around on the bouncy castle or sample the pig roast and barbecue to name but a few activities.

Each year, each school in the village designs their own float that will take part in the procession along The Latchen before ending up in the recreation grounds where the award for the best float of the year is presented. Previous float themes include "Last of the Summer Wine", "2999" and the "Teletubbies". Reports, including pictures, from the 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 fêtes are available.
